Handlung
Der Ex-Polizist und Privatdetektiv Billy Taggart wird von Mayor Nicholas Hostetler, dem amtierenden Bürgermeister von New York City, damit beauftragt, dessen Ehefrau Cathleen zu beschatten. Der Politiker vermutet nämlich, dass seine Gattin fremdgeht. Das kann Taggart durch seine Ermittlungen dann auch tatsächlich eindeutig beweisen. Als allerdings der neue Liebhaber der Ehefrau nur einige Tage später tot aufgefunden wird, beginnt der Privatdetektiv, das Leben und Wirken des Bürgermeisters näher unter die Lupe zu nehmen. Was er dabei zu Tage fördert, lässt ihn immer mehr in einen Strudel aus Skandalen und Intrigen geraten. Schnell hat sich Taggart durch seine Ermittlungen einige sehr einflussreiche Feinde gemacht. Nun wird es schwierig für ihn, seinen Kopf wieder aus der Schlinge zu ziehen…
